I do find it hilarious that it wasn't a JHS pedal though.
from a marketing point of view, a Klone has got to be the biggest possible seller; you’ve got all that crazy price escalation, the rarity, etc., that make it close to unique in the pedal world. (I can think of many pedals I’d want before an original, if there wasn’t the trade in value involved, but when Klons were getting big, I was using something I liked better anyway.) And, it’s a cheaper pedal in terms of parts, than say a Moog filter (which I might buy his snap together kit for).
 
I thought about this last night... You know, it would have sold just as well if JHS offered a fully assembled Klone for $99.
