Jlcpcb and tariffs

I had an order from JLCPCB pass through customs on Feb 7th (the day the de minimis threshold was dropped). I had to pay approximately 41% in additional tariffs.
How large was your order? Asking in case there was a dollar threshold that may have triggered assessing the extra tariffs.

Spoke too soon, my shipment is headed back to Cincinnati (yes, from Georgia) for formal customs processing.

Talk about efficiency. 😂

Hey, you were right!
What a shit show. Whatever happens is going to happen but can we just make a decision lol.

Okay Robert, so the one you already had to pay tariffs on, how where you contacted? I have come to the conclusion that at some point I am going to get hit with it and I am concerned about getting scammed by the middle man.

It's always a little shaky....

The first time JLCPCB contacted me first saying that DHL was trying to contact me before destroying my shipment... A couple days later I received a text with a link to submit payment. Why DHL didn't try texting me first, and what method they actually used to attempt to contact is beyond me.

The second time DHL just delivered the package and I received a bill in the mail about a week later.

I have another shipment that I suspect is going to get caught up by the De Minimis BS on April 1st, so we'll see how that goes.

So how much are you gonna have to raise prices?

Unless something drastically changes I'm not planning to... on PCBS at least.

I've been paying tariffs on PCBs for years, it was just the smaller orders that avoided it and it was always a hassle to split orders up like that anyway.

I'm not convinced you save much by splitting an order into two smaller orders to avoid tariffs, the additional shipping costs eat up any savings and the hassle alone makes me not want to bother. I used to play this "game" at checkout where I'd change quantities and swap Gerbers in and out to find the "sweet spot" where shipping was at a minimum while avoiding going over the $800 threshold. You could save a couple hundred bucks each time by doing that, but it literally took hours and any surprise surcharges (panelization, engineering fees, etc) would throw a wrench in the whole plan.

I finally just caved and started placing orders for what we need, ignoring any thresholds and just eating the fees.... more expensive yes, but the reduced stress level is worth every penny to me. 🤯:ROFLMAO:

Not being able to prepay customs is a bit annoying, but I assume that will eventually be possible again once the dust settles.

Some components could be affected, but those are already not particularly a bargain from here anyway.... they're offered more for convenience in those situations where you don't want to place an order with Mouser for a single zener diode or some oddball IC. 😂

Paying extra for reduced stress is basically my life philosophy, when I can afford it. So I get it!

I tried an experiment and placed two JLC orders this month instead of one big one. First was $200 and the second $250. No problems with Customs/duties/Tariffs. DHL delivery.

It's crazy to think back in the early days I would regularly drop $2k+ on PCB manufacturing before places like JLC came along.

I've had no issues with orders below the $800 threshold aside from that one that got caught on the day the threshold was changed...

My understanding is that the De Minimis pause might be ending on April 1st though. What a great April Fools prank.

There's only one way to defeat this ...
We must band together!

Coming this Summer: PedalPCBean Tarriff Mania.
(Or maybe November, ya know. Bean Summer)

Holy shit. I’m so sorry (not only for you, but for all of us). I don’t think it’s still clear yet (and won’t be until the big “Liberation Day” announcement today) whether Trump is going to limit tariffs only to specified countries or, as he indicated yesterday, apply them to any and all imports to the US. I have two shipments coming from Tayda (one via regular mail but it doesn’t appear to have entered the country yet, and one by UPS that they haven’t even shipped yet) so I guess that will be where I find out whether Thailand is now included in these tariffs or not.

M

Edit to add: actually, I think it’s pretty likely that, even if he only targets selected countries that he believes are unfair to the US, Thailand is going to be one of them. Apparently Morgan Stanley reported that “Brazil, Indonesia, India, Thailand and Vietnam have the highest proportion of products with a greater than 5% tariff differential compared to the rate at which the US taxes their nations’ goods.”
