Notaklon

Maybe it’s just me but I kinda get where he’s coming from and his quirkiness… weird/dry humor..He is obviously pretty smart or really dang lucky to have someone directing the business that is a marketing genius.. I think they have a pretty goofy , laid back approach to their business… and obviously loves pedals as much as us nerds…. I mean… who else promotes other people’s products more than their own… Genius. What’s wrong with actually wanting other people and companies to succeed and grow… I really don’t understand the hate… We are all essentially copying and cloning circuits.. Are we just jealous he’s actually successful at doing it and providing a comfortable life to people by employing them… they seem pretty on point and a tight knit little family.

If I wasn't a DIYer I'd probably want this pedal. Looks like fun.
This is exactly the point. I had a very quick discussion with my wife about this. As DIY’ers here we scoff at this idea of solderless pedals simply because it’s not true DIY which makes us “purists”. She thought this was a great idea for people to get their feet wet instead of spending hundreds on a soldering iron/components to find out they don’t like the process of the end result pedal. It’s really an untapped market IMO and a clever idea.

That being said my wife said he looks like he’s murdered 4 people in his basement and to never trust anyone whose first and last names are both first names 😂. Personally, i think he’s more knowledgeable about pedals and their history than any of us. This is the only reason I would watch his YouTube channel. Repackaging an existing pedal with a small tweak doesn’t make it yours. He must be doing something right to have so much influence on the market. I wouldn’t trust him. Or his soldering iron

Are you really a DIYer if you don’t design your own circuits and etch your own PCBs? Or make your own transistors?!?

Yep, just drop it in the box and tighten down the screws.

Hey, if it gets more people into the hobby that's great. Some folks don't have (any business using) a soldering iron and I suppose it's a step in the right direction.

I don't hate it, or JHS, or Josh.
I can’t stand guitar/bass forum hype, and where little boxes with circuits in are treated as sacrosanct and forth £300 for no reason - probably why I ended up on here, because I asked why, and “can I make that myself” …
Then comes “oh crap, it’s not working, what even are all these bits doing” and suddenly you’re learning things and understanding things. (And making whatever hyped pedal it is for a price you can afford) - anything that bursts the hype bubble is good - and to be fair to Jhs and the YouTube channel they do a fair amount of “if it sounds good, it is good” and cheaper pedal stuff
It’s okay. It’s not shameful to like Avenir Next.
As a graphic designer you get a high five, even when others make jokes at your our expense
